Search a state government's website for laws/policies

  • Open Google
  • Search for your state government's website by typing the following:
    state name and the word government
    Example: Rhode Island and government
  • At the website for the state government, look for a box to enter search terms
  • In the search box, enter terms related to your issue and the words law or legislation
    Example: Bullying and Law or Legislation

Find articles in newspapers on efforts to pass legislation

Use this database to search newspapers from different states

  • Enter your search terms
  • At the set of results, scroll down in the column at the left and click "Location", then click "More". 
  • In the window that opens check the box to "Include" the state in which you want to find discussion about your issue/policy

Find court cases in a state

Instructions:

  • Click Legal
  • Click Cases
  • Enter search terms related to your issue (bullying, transgender, etc)
  • In the column at the left, scroll down and click "Court"
  • Under "State" click more
  • Click on the link for your state
  • Court cases will be displayed that occurred in your state (most relevant will be listed first)

Google

Also search Google for webpages and news sites that cover lawsuits. Use keywords related to your topic and the words lawsuit and the name of the state. To find news and other webpages from a certain time period, follow the instructions below:

  • Conduct a search in Google... bullying and lawsuit and massachusetts
  • At your results page, choose "Tools" at right.
  • Click the "anytime" dropdown menu and choose "custom range"
  • Enter in beginning and starting date to cover a range of years
  • Click "Go"

 

Browse current issues in a database

CQ Researcher - Scroll down and choose a "Topic" area to browse
