Off-Campus Access

Learn about accessing Ely Library's resources while off-campus, and how to troubleshoot common connection issues.

Web Browser Troubleshooting Tips

Sometimes web browser settings can conflict with database access. Depending on the database vendor, specific settings or cookies may need to be enabled in your browser for the database to function properly.

To determine if a browser issue is causing the conflict, consider trying the following steps:

  • Clear your web browser cache and cookies, and restart your browser. Many times this will fix the issue. Make sure that your browser allows cookies since many databases require them.
  • Enable cookies in your web browser. Many databases use cookies to operate properly.
  • Access the database using a different browser. Occasionally a database works better with one or another browser.
  • Check to see if your web browser needs to be updated.
  • Review the security settings on your web browser, security software and firewall for any potential conflicts.

Advanced Web Browser Troubleshooting Tips

Please only try these if you are comfortable with making changes to your computer settings. As you test options, it is a good idea to keep track of changes that you are making to your set-up.

  • Disable any pop-up blocker software, or web browser extensions. Some databases require pop-ups to work correctly.
    • If the pop-up blocker settings or software was causing the problem, consider allowing pop-ups from the specific vendor so you don't experience the same problem the next time.
  • Disable any firewall or antivirus software before you log into the database. You may re-enable this software after you successfully log into the database.
    • If the firewall or antivirus software was causing the problem, consider adding the database to the firewall exceptions so you don't experience the same problem the next time.

Role of Cache and Cookies in Database Access Explained

If your web browser’s security settings are strict and block cookies, some library databases and pop-up windows might not function correctly. When our database vendors perform maintenance on their systems, it is possible that you might need to clear your browser's cache.

You can adjust your browser's security settings to allow databases to work properly. To maintain high security while ensuring database functionality, consider adding the databases as Trusted Sites or Exceptions in your browser settings.

History: A record of the websites you have visited.

Cache: Saved elements (parts) from those sites. This may include pictures, cookies, etc. The cache makes loading the webpage faster the next time to go to it.

Cookies: Small pieces of data about you saved in your browser. Cookies let the website keep track of some of your activities, such as your login information. This way you can log into a site one time, instead of every time you open new page. Cookies reduce privacy, but are not a computer virus.
