Off-Campus Access

Learn about accessing Ely Library's resources while off-campus, and how to troubleshoot common connection issues.

Common Linking Errors

First Step: Check the Source

Sometimes links are embedded in courses, syllabus, or webpages that are out of date or might not be using the permalink. If the link you are trying to use to access the library's resource does not originate from the library's website, or is not using a permalink, try recreating the search from the library's homepage Search Box to locate the resource.

While verifying that the link comes from the library's website is our recommended first step, there are other common linking errors that might occur when accessing our resources which are identified below. If you need assistance with resolving any of these issues, or are experiencing a problem not listed, please contact the library to report an issue.

Links to a Different Resource

The link in the catalog brought me to the wrong item...

Sometimes links to articles in the catalog do not resolve directly to the article cited in the catalog. If you wind up at a vendor's website instead of the article in question, try searching for the title of the article (or the volume, issue, and page number of the journal) in the vendor's search box. Often this will locate the proper article for you.

We will try to determine whether we do have access to the item that you want, and provide you with the correct link to the item. If we do not have access to the item, please submit an Interlibrary Loan request.

Link Goes to Review, not Resource

If the link goes to a review of the resource, but not the resource itself...

We have chosen to index book reviews along with other content in the catalog to help you determine if you want a particular resource, even if we do not provide direct access to it. Unfortunately, many times the review of a work is given the same title as the work (book, article, etc.) itself, with no indication that it is a review.

If you locate a review and want a copy of the book, try searching the catalog again and limiting your search to "Print Book" and/or "Ebook." This will eliminate all articles with the same title.

If you locate a review of an journal article, but not the article itself, try locating the journal by title in the Journals AZ Finder. Then locate the article using the volume, issue, and page number from the citation in the review.

Need to Pay for Access

I am being told that I need to pay to access the content. Is this right?

There can be a few things that go wrong. The first step to try is to check the link, and make sure that you are approaching the database/resource directly from the library's website. Ely Library has agreements with a range of vendors and publishers, and the links we use to them on the library's website are specific to our users (you!). If you are trying to access content from these vendors directly, without using the library's link, there is a possibility that they are not recognizing your Westfield State University affiliation.

If you are following the link from the library's website, and are still having issues accessing the resource, please contact the library for assistance.

Full-Text Link Option Doesn't Bring me to the Resource

Check for Alternate Links

  • Locate the resource that you would like to use via Ely Library's Search. We recommend selecting the name of the item so that you are viewing the full record of the item.
  • Once you are looking at the record of the resource, select Alternate Links from the Access Options menu.

  • When you select the Alternate Links drop-down, you may see several links for the resource.
  • Select an alternate link to see if there is access to the article or resource available from other vendors. If not, please request item through Interlibrary Loan.

Use Journal AZ Finder to locate the article

  1. On the library's main webpage, click on Journals A-Z.
  2. Enter the title of the journal -- not the article title.
  3. If there is full text in another database, that database will appear on this page. Make sure to check the volume, issue and dates included in the library subscription.

Please keep in mind, that these approaches will help locate resources that the library provides full text access to; not every article listed in our database is available in full text. If we do not have an item in full text, you can request a full text copy using Interlibrary Loan.
