State Normal School
Barre, Massachusetts September 4, 1839

On September 4, 1839 the State Normal School was opened as a co- educational school with a student body of eight men and eight women in Barre, Massachusetts. The principal was 42 year old Dr. Samuel P. Newman, a distinguished professor of rhetoric and political economy from Bowdoin College.
