Dr. Samuel P. Newman

Dr. Samuel P. Newman, principal, Barre, Massachusetts 1839 - 1842

The institution's first Leader, Dr, Newman was 42 years old when he became principal. A distinguished professor of rhetoric and political economy from Bowdoin College, he suffered from poor health. His health and the difficulty students had in accessing the Barre location lead to the failure of the school and its move to Westfield.
