Dr. Samuel P. Newman, principal, Barre, Massachusetts 1839 - 1842
The institution's first Leader, Dr, Newman was 42 years old when he became principal. A distinguished professor of rhetoric and political economy from Bowdoin College, he suffered from poor health. His death and the difficulty students had in accessing the Barre location lead to the failure of the school at Barre and its move to Westfield.
