These sites contain highlights of the materials held at the Smithsonian. The digital collections include images, collections, oral histories, and exhibits.

The Frick Collection & Art Reference Library(New York City)

The online collection can be accessed by using the "Collection" link and then using the links under "Permanent Collections" on the left. "The Frick Collection includes some of the best-known paintings by the greatest European artists, major works of sculpture (among them one of the finest groups of small bronzes in the world), superb eighteenth-century French furniture and porcelains, Limoges enamels, Oriental rugs, and other works of remarkable quality."

J. Paul Getty Museums (Los Angeles, California & Malibu, California)

Many pieces of artwork can be viewed online by using the "Explore Art" link near the top. The Getty Museum in L.A. contains European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs, and the Malibu location houses Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities.

The online collections can be accessed under "Collections". Housing over 35,000 works of art from around the world, the Museum's permanent collections are made up of works of art pre-1848.

Part of the collection can be viewed online under the "Permanent Collection" link. "The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is home to one of the country's finest collections of American and European art created since 1940."

Museum of Modern Art (New York City)

MoMA's online collections can be viewed under "The Collection" link. "The Museum of Modern Art's collection has grown to include 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. MoMA also owns some 22,000 films, videos, and media works, as well as film stills, scripts, posters and historical documents" that cover modern and contemporary art.

The online collections are available under the "Collection" link. "The National Gallery's permanent collection spans the period from about 1250 to 1900 and consists of Western European paintings."

The collection is well-organized and images can be browsed by headings, names, subjects, libraries or searched by keyword.

Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (Library of Congress)

This online catalog provides access to many of the prints, photographs, and other images available at the Library of Congress (about one million digital images). Images can be searched for by keyword, browsed by subject headings, or by collection.

Smithsonian Photography Initiative

The SPI makes available online part of the Smithsonian's collection of 13 million images. A search feature lets users search for images by topic, geographic locale, creator/photographer, decade, medium, and museum/research center. "Enter the Frame" lets you view images by keywords and then create your own slideshow.
